What Attachment Style Are You? How To Know, Why It Matters, and How To Change It If You Need To | Amir Levine

Your health, relationships, and self-esteem all hinge on your attachment style. Here's how to know if you're anxious or avoidant — and how to get more secure. Dr. Amir Levine is a Columbia-trained psychiatrist and neuroscientist and coauthor of the multi-million-copy bestseller Attached, which brought attachment theory into mainstream conversation and remains the #1 book on Amazon in Relationships more than a decade later. His new book Secure expands this work into emotional regulation and everyday well-being. In this episode we talk about: What attachment theory is  The four attachment styles — anxious, avoidant, secure, and fearful avoidant — and how to identify which one you are Why your attachment style is not fixed and how it can change  What happens in your brain when you're ignored or excluded How being securely connected can extend your life The five pillars of a secure life  How to right-size a relationship with someone unreliable  Small, seemingly insignificant daily interactions as vehicles for change Two rules of secure engagement that can defuse almost any argument  Why anxious and avoidant attachment styles each have genuine superpowers How to build your "attachment topography" Get the 10% with Dan Harris app here Sign up for Dan's free newsletter here Follow Dan on social: Instagram, TikTok Subscribe to our YouTube Channel Join Dan, Sebene Selassie, and Jeff Warren for Meditation Party, a 3-day immersive retreat at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, October 16–18. Dr. Ramani: If You're Thinking About Going No Contact With a Family Member - Listen to THIS (How to Know If It's Time To Walk Away)

Some relationships leave us questioning whether love is enough to stay. In this conversation, Jay sits down with Dr. Ramani to explore the painful reality of family estrangement and the growing number of people considering no contact with those closest to them. Together, they unpack the difference between self-protection and punishment, why guilt often accompanies healthy boundaries, and how years of unresolved hurt can lead someone to step away from a relationship they once fought hard to save. Rather than offering simple answers, this episode invites a deeper reflection on safety, repair, accountability, and healing. It challenges the belief that family ties should come at the expense of your well-being and reminds us that choosing yourself is rarely easy. Whether you're navigating a difficult relationship, supporting someone who is, or trying to understand a loved one's decision, this conversation offers compassion, clarity, and the reassurance that healing doesn't always look the way we expect. In this episode you'll learn: How to Know When No Contact Is Necessary How to Stop Abandoning Yourself for Family How to Recognize When Repair Isn’t Working How to Handle Guilt After Going No Contact How to Protect Your Peace Around Toxic Relatives How to Navigate Family Pressure and Backlash How to Choose Self-Protection Over Self-Betrayal Not every relationship is meant to be kept at the cost of your peace. Sometimes healing means repairing a connection, and sometimes it means creating distance from what continues to hurt you. Buddhist Strategies For Reducing Everyday Addictions (To Your Phone, Food, Booze, And More) | Sister Dang Nghiem

We're all hooked on something. Here's the way out, according to an MD who became a beloved nun. Sister Dang Nghiem, MD, ("Sister D") was born in 1968 in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive, the daughter of a Vietnamese mother and an American soldier. She lost her mother at the age of twelve and immigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen with her brother. Living in various foster homes, she learned English and went on to earn a medical degree from the University of California – San Francisco. After suffering further tragedy and loss, she quit her practice as a doctor to travel to Plum Village monastery in France founded by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, where she was ordained a nun in 2000, and given the name Dang Nghiem, which means adornment with nondiscrimination. She is the author of a memoir, Healing: A Woman's Journey from Doctor to Nun (2010), and Mindfulness as Medicine: A Story of Healing and Spirit (2015). This episode is part of our monthlong Do Life Better series.  We talk about: Sister D's Buddhist version of the 12 step program, which is a combination of two canonical buddhist lists: the 4 Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path How willpower doesn't fit into the Buddhist path of understanding and working with addiction  How to change addiction at its root Practical applications of mindfulness Self-compassion The importance of social support Her thoughts on our relationships to our phones  And more Related Episodes:  This Episode Will Make You Stronger | Sister Dang Nghiem The Science Of Manifestation | James Doty Sign up for Dan's newsletter here Follow Dan on social: Instagram, TikTok Ten Percent Happier online bookstore Subscribe to our YouTube Channel Our favorite playlists on: Anxiety, Sleep, Relationships, Most Popular Episodes Full Shownotes: https://www.meditatehappier.com/podcast/tph/sister-d-899 Additional Resources: Plum Village Deer Park Monastery  Deer Park Monastery YouTube channel For an exclusive offering related to this episode, go to www.DanHarris.com

9 Rules for a Happier Vacation

Many people come home from vacation feeling disappointed. Not because the trip was bad, but because they expected it to do more than any vacation possibly can. In my previous episode on leisure, I discussed its importance to happiness and well-being. A vacation, done well, is really an opportunity to practice leisure more intentionally—whether that means a chance to reconnect with the people you love, lose yourself in nature or culture or read a book you've been meaning to for three years. In this episode of Office Hours, I share nine research-backed protocols that can help you return from time away feeling happier, more fulfilled, and genuinely restored. We discuss why anticipation is one of the most enjoyable parts of any trip, why shorter vacations may be better than longer ones, and how taking too many photos or posting on social media can pull you out of the very experience you're trying to enjoy. — Brought to you by: • Noble Mobile—With Noble, there is only one plan: The No-Bull Plan. Evolution Designed Your Senses to Hide Reality | Donald Hoffman

Every time you open your eyes, you're not seeing reality. According to the mathematics of evolution, you never have. Donald Hoffman is a cognitive scientist and professor who has spent over 40 years building mathematical models of perception. His book The Case Against Reality makes one of the most unsettling arguments in modern science: your senses didn't evolve to reveal the truth. They evolved to hide it. Think of your body, your thoughts, your memories, and your entire experience of this world as a VR headset. Not a metaphor. A working model backed by mathematics. The headset gives you exactly what you need to play the game of life. It hides what is actually running underneath. Consciousness isn't a product of the brain. It's the other way around. Neurons don't exist when no one is looking. Nothing in your behavior is caused by neural activity. What's actually driving your life is something science is only now beginning to map. The way out isn't more information. It's a practice. The silence between your thoughts? That's you. When you learn to watch your emotions instead of becoming them, the grip of every story you've been telling yourself starts to release.
