Episode 178: What I learned from working with a stylist

Episode 178: What I learned from working with a stylist

Welcome back to episode 178 of The Diet Diaries, where I’m sharing an intriguing and unexpected aspect of self-care and body image—working with a stylist.

What I learned through this process is that a stylist is essentially a wardrobe coach. Because getting dressed is a skill—choosing clothes, putting together outfits, identifying your personal style and what makes you feel like you—these aren’t actions we necessarily know how to do and we get SO easily influenced by outside opinions that we quickly lose connection to what matters to us.

Here’s some of what I talk about today:
    * The process I went through cleaning out my closet and the big ah ha I had as a result
    * What a stylist can teach us about our own body image and personal style
    * How decision fatigue affects our daily choices when trying to get dressed
    * How this connects back to self care
    * How to figure out what you like and what it means for something to look good

And, Soft Body Summer is open for sign up today! A 3 week self guided course to learn the 3 key skills you need to feel at ease in your body so you can have your most confident summer ever. Click here for all the details and to join us.

Episode 177: Are you causing someone else's body image issues?

Episode 177: Are you causing someone else's body image issues?

Thanks for listening to episode 177 of The Diet Diaries.

Today’s conversation is really close to my heart, especially as we lead up to the launch of Soft Body Summer in 2 weeks!!

I’m talking about something that’s been on my mind a lot: how we talk about other people’s bodies.  And whether we are inadvertently causing other people's body image issues.

We often default to complimenting weight loss as if it’s always a positive thing, but let’s unpack that. What are we really saying when we comment on someone’s size change? How might this impact them if the reasons behind their appearance changes aren’t happy or healthy ones?

There is SO much nuance to this that we need to think through.

We're taught since birth to see weight loss as universally good and weight gain as bad, but the realities are far more complex. This conversation is about questioning our reflex reactions and considering a more thoughtful approach to how we interact with each other about our bodies.

Some questions I’m thinking through in today’s episode:
Why do we find it acceptable to comment on weight loss but not weight gain? What does this say about our cultural attitudes towards body size? How can we shift away from compliments that focus on body size/shape?
And just a heads up that Soft Body Summer is coming! May 20—June 9. A three week self guided mini course and private Instagram chat group. Learn 3 essential skills so you can feel at ease in your body and have your most confident, relaxed summer yet. At any size and in any shape. Sign up opens May 13!

Episode 176: There is no such thing as a summer body

Episode 176: There is no such thing as a summer body

Hey everyone! Thanks for listening to episode 176 of The Diet Diaries.

Today’s episode is an "I see you, I hear you, and we're in this together" kind of episode that came out of an accidental trip into the Instagram black hole of summer body transformations, before and after photos and flat ab recipes.

It’s infuriating to see so much emphasis on one "ideal" body type—especially coming from other women. It's even tougher to swallow how we glorify such unrealistic standards. If you’ve ever wondered why you have body image issues, listen up.

As always, this got me thinking about the deeper issues of body image that affect all of us, regardless of size. From size 2 to size 22, the struggles are real, but the representation? Not so much. We idealize the smaller sizes and shame the larger ones, which just perpetuates the cycle of insecurity and unrealistic expectations.

In this episode, you’ll hear real talk about the pressures and frustrations that come with these images and messages. I talk about the importance of recognizing the diversity of body types and accepting them all. Why is there only one "acceptable" way to look?

As summer approaches and we start shedding layers of clothes, it’s essential to address the body image issues that can surface. I always want you to know you're not alone in feeling overwhelmed or frustrated by what you see online. We’re in this together, and we can choose to follow and support voices that make us feel better, not worse.

So...Soft Body Summer is coming. Three weeks to create your own personalized step by step guide to deal with summer focused body insecurity alongside a community of women. Over these three weeks you'll, learn, customize and practice 3 specific skills that you can take with you all season (and beyond) to have your most confident, easeful summer yet 😎 More details very soon!

Episode 175: Are your workouts too hard, too easy or just right?

Episode 175: Are your workouts too hard, too easy or just right?

This episode is long overdue! Today I’m talking about the transformative changes I've made to my workout routine since last August, and the insights I've gained from adjusting how I exercise as I approach my mid-forties and navigate perimenopause.
At its core, this is  about understanding how our bodies adapt and respond to different types of movements and intensities, and making informed choices that enhance our well-being. I've shifted from long, leisurely walks to a more structured approach involving strength training and varied cardio, and I've noticed significant changes not just physically, but how I feel mentally and emotionally.

What you’ll hear in today’s episode:
The importance of evolving your exercise routine over time as your body adaptsWhy integrating strength training into regular fitness regimens to maintain muscle mass, metabolism, and overall health is something you HAVE to doThe role of higher intensity workouts and how to approach adding them in to your routineWhy working out needs to feel at least a little uncomfortable sometimesHow to know if you’re working hard enough
I hope this epodes gets you thinking about what steps you can take to make your workouts more aligned with your health goals and how you want to feel in your body.

Episode 174: Fashion as wellness with Liza Lieberman

Episode 174: Fashion as wellness with Liza Lieberman

I am thrilled for today’s episode which has been  in the works for almost 4 months!

I’m talking with fashion stylist Liza Lieberman. I’ve been following her on IG for several years and have learned so much from her—she has truly helped reshape the way I think about getting dressed which has had an incredible impact on my body confidence.

Liza believes that fashion is wellness and our conversation dives into what that means and why it matters so much for our well being.

Here is some of what we talk about in today’s episode:

The emotional power of clothes and how what we wear can influence how we feel and perceive ourselves.Overcoming self-doubt and the "I can't wear that" mindset How to incorporate trends into your wardrobe in a way that feels authentic to youHow to navigate the complex world of online shopping and making fashion choices that are truly for you.
This conversation will get you thinking about what you’re wearing, why you’re wearing it and how it’s affecting the way you show up in the world.

Follow along with Liza on Instagram and on her website where you can learn more about her styling services and seasonal capsule wardrobe guides (she just released an extended size capsule for Spring!)

Episode 173: If your diet worked, why do you have to keep going back to it?

Episode 173: If your diet worked, why do you have to keep going back to it?

We often talk about things "working" for us, especially in the realm of diets. But if we have to go back to them over and over, did they really work?

This episode is a bit of a thought experiment on what it truly means for something to work, especially when it comes to dieting and weight loss. I ponder the concept of 'working' not as a short-term fix but as a long-term solution.

I ask some tough questions – like why we chase temporary fixes and ignore the deeper, more permanent solutions. It's about shifting our focus from the immediate gratification of quick results to the enduring satisfaction of real, lasting change. How often have we returned to a diet that "worked" before, only to find ourselves back at square one?

This conversation is really about challenging our definitions of success and pushing ourselves to think beyond the next quick fix. It's about learning, growing, and maybe even accepting a bit of discomfort now for a lot more happiness later.
