  • Rafael Trujillo Part 1: Scourge of the Dominican Republic

Rafael Trujillo Part 1: Scourge of the Dominican Republic

Rafael Trujillo held the Dominican Republic in his grip for 31 long years, from 1930 to 1961. He ruled with extraordinary brutality and a colossal ego. Yet riding the currents of geopolitics, he managed to hold onto power for far longer than many deemed possible. Even when dictators were being toppled all over Europe, Trujillo’s Caribbean fiefdom stood firm. But before all that, our story begins in the summer of 1917. On a sugar plantation, baking under a tropical sun, a guard patrols on horseback - master of all he surveys. Little does anyone realise, the seeds of a three-decade dictatorship are already being sown… A Noiser podcast production. Narrated by Paul McGann. Featuring Lauren Derby, Edward Paulino, Eric Roorda, Alex von Tunzelmann. This is Part 1 of 3. Written by Duncan Barrett | Assistant Producer: Chris McDonald | Exec produced by Joel Duddell | Sound supervisors: Tom Pink, Matt Peaty | Sound design & audio editing by George Tapp | Assembly editing by Dorry Macaulay, Rob Plummer | Compositions by Oliver Baines, Dorry Macaulay, Tom Pink | Mix & mastering: Josh Latham | Recording engineer: Joseph McGann. • The Khmer Rouge & Pol Pot's Reign of Terror

The Khmer Rouge & Pol Pot's Reign of Terror

When the Khmer Rouge marched into Phnom Penh in April, 1975, they immediately declared 'Year Zero' - a ruthless ideological crusade to reset history, and forge Pol Pot's vision for a communist utopia. Over the next four years, the regime carried out a genocide that killed nearly two million people - almost a quarter of Cambodia's population. Dan Snow is joined by Ben Kiernan, author of 'How Pol Pot Came to Power' and 'The Pol Pot regime'. Together, they trace how the turmoil of the Vietnam War fuelled the rise of the Khmer Rouge, detailing the horror of their reign and their eventual downfall in 1979. Season 2, Episode 27 ·  Video

    The Ballyseedy Massacre (Part 2)

After committing one of the worst atrocities in the Irish Civil War, the State attempts to cover up its role in the massacre. As “Terror Month” in Kerry continues, further atrocities are carried out with more prisoners blown up by landmines. However, the man who gave the order at Ballyseedy, Paddy O'Daly, remains unrepentant, stating: “No one asked me to take my kid gloves to Kerry and I didn’t take them.” Diarmaid and Catriona discuss the fall out from Ballyseedy, how the truth finally emerges, and why the Dáil record still contains the cover-up. • The Stone Age

    Season 2, Episode 40

    The Stone Age

The Stone Age is the foundational period of human history, stretching from roughly 3 million to 5,000 years ago, and accounting for over 99% of humanity’s time on earth. It’s the era when modern humans evolved and migrated out of Africa to populate the globe, developed language and the ability to make tools, and learned to farm crops and domesticate animals. But what do we really know about the way our Stone Age relatives lived? What role did the shifting climate play in their evolution? And how are our ancestors reflected in our bodies, lifestyles and communities today? This is a Short History Of The Stone Age.  A Noiser Production, written by Emmie Rose Price-Goodfellow. With thanks to Dr James Dilley, founder of AncientCraft, an organisation teaching prehistoric skills and techniques at universities and museums across the world. • Margaret Thatcher

    Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher was one of the most controversial figures of the 20th Century. Praised by some as a fearless leader and feminist icon, and despised by others as a heartless politician, the Iron Lady caused divisions wherever she went. But why did Britain’s first female Prime Minister inspire such extreme hatred? What policies did she implement, how did they affect the communities of Britain? And what, if anything, is her legacy today? A Noiser podcast production. Hosted by John Hopkins. Written by Nicole Edmunds. With thanks to Chris Collins, historian, and editor of Margaretthatcher.org. This episode was originally featured on Short History Of...
