How to Make a Difference: Part 2

Think about the last time you had a discouraging thought. Maybe you told yourself, "This won't work. I'm not cut out for this." Did you take that thought as fact? Last week, we talked with psychologist Martin Seligman about why some people come to believe that their actions don’t matter. In the second part of our conversation, he explains how we can strengthen our sense of agency, learn to see new possibilities, and build confidence in our ability to shape what happens next. Anyone who has struggled with depression knows that it feels terrible. But is there a point to that terrible feeling? We consider a new way of thinking about depression in our latest YouTube video -- check it out, and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss our future videos.   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. • The Disclosure Dilemma: Oversharing (With Leslie John)

The Disclosure Dilemma: Oversharing (With Leslie John)

We've been taught that oversharing is a major social sin. We cringe at the thought of unloading emotional baggage on a stranger or admitting a flaw to our boss. So most of us default to silence. But what if not sharing is the bigger mistake?  In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at some of the surprising costs of keeping quiet, why we misjudge the risks of revealing our true selves, and how opening up—even about our flaws—can make us more trusted, influential, and connected. Katy speaks with Leslie John, the James. E. Burke Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and the author of the new book Revealing: The Underrated Power of Oversharing. They delve into Leslie's lived experience of navigating a deeply personal family silence and the profound, transformative conversation that unfolded when she finally chose to open up. Then, Katy and Leslie discuss the science behind disclosure, why we are often more vulnerable to online scams than we realize, and what happens to our relationships when we choose to reveal a little more. Stress: The Science of Chilling Out

Stress! We’re all feeling it. And besides just feeling crappy, we’re also told that stress can wreak havoc on our bodies. The internet has a million solutions: vagus nerve stimulators, deep breaths, or a hot sauna! If that doesn’t work, maybe a cold plunge? But what does the science say about all this — what works to lower our stress? And is it really THAT bad to be stressed out? We dive into the research to find out, with psychology Professor Mark Seery, psychology Professor Jeremy Jamieson, and anatomist Dr. Theresa Larkin.    Find our transcript here: https://tinyurl.com/ScienceVsStress  In this episode, we cover: (00:00) We’re all stressed out!  (02:37) Is stress that bad for us? (13:55) A healthier stress response (22:32) How our vagus nerves are involved in stress (25:57) Can we “hack” our vagus nerves?  (30:42) What else can relieve stress?  This episode was produced by Meryl Horn, with help from Michelle Dang, Rose Rimler, and Ekedi Fausther-Keeys. We’re edited by Blythe Terrell. Wendy Zukerman is the executive producer. Fact checking by Erica Akiko Howard. Video editing and sound by Bobby Lord. Music written by Bumi Hidaka, Peter Leonard, Emma Munger and Bobby Lord. How to Make a Difference: Part 1

Why do some people act on the possibilities before them, while others come to believe that nothing they do will make a difference? Psychologist Martin Seligman describes his groundbreaking research on learned helplessness, and explains how the stories we tell ourselves about setbacks can shape what we do next. We also explore how optimism can help us rediscover our ability to change things for the better. If you have a question or comment about the science of optimism and pessimism that you'd be willing to share with the Hidden Brain audience after listening to this episode, please find a quiet room and record a voice memo on your phone. 23 Weeks 6 Days

When Kelley Benham and her husband Tom French finally got pregnant, after many attempts and a good deal of technological help, everything was perfect. Until it wasn't. Their story raises questions that, until recently, no parent had to face… and that are still nearly impossible to answer. This hour, which we first released in 2013, we spend the entire episode on the story of Kelley and Tom, whose daughter was born at 23 weeks and 6 days, roughly halfway to full term. Their story contains an entire universe of questions about the lines between life and death, reflex and will, and the confusing tug of war between two basic moral touchstones: doing no harm...and doing everything in our power to help. Kelley has written about her experience in a brilliant series of articles in the Tampa Bay Times.  If you want to know more about what we talk about in the update tacked onto the end of this episode, check out the links below:  This Photo Here (https://zpr.io/ZvMD42u9hzuu) Plus This Video Here (https://zpr.io/8ewZUD368TzP) Check out the book that Tom and Kelley wrote about Juniper here: Juniper: The girl who was born too soon. (https://zpr.io/8ewZUD368TzP) And when you're done listening to the episode, be sure to check out the video below--but be warned, it does contain spoilers.  23 Weeks 6 Days VideoEPISODE CREDITS:Reported by Jad AbumradProduced by Matt Kielty and Jad AbumradUpdate produced by Pat Walters and Anisa Vietzewith mixing help from Jeremy Bloom  Sign up for our newsletter!! Climate Overshoot: The World Beyond 1.5°C

The United Nations says the world will pass its most important climate target within a few years. So can we bring the planet's temperature back down quickly? Or will the damage be irreversible? In 2015, world leaders agreed in Paris to try to keep the global temperature below 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels to avoid the worst effects of climate change. But the UN now says what scientists call "overshoot" is guaranteed, and it may have devastating consequences. Experts are worried that the higher temperature may trigger "tipping points" in vital parts of our planet's climate system, including coral reefs, glaciers, rainforests and ocean currents. Once past their tipping points, they could flip from helping to keep the Earth cool to making it even warmer. In this show, The Climate Question hosts Graihagh Jackson and Jordan Dunbar talk to Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Producers: Simon Watts, Melanie Stewart-Smith and Diane Richardson Sound Mix: Tom Brignell and Phil Bull Editor: Simon Watts
