SLP 626: Healing from Trauma: Recover, Rebuild and Reconnect with Michelle Akers

In this special episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim Morrison reconnects with Michelle Akers (formerly Michelle Powell), holistic trauma recovery expert and author of The Mastery of Wellness, to explore what it means to heal from past trauma, rediscover yourself and create a life filled with greater connection, love and possibility. Michelle shares her deeply personal journey from growing up in a domestic violence environment to finding love again, meeting her husband on Tinder and marrying on Mount Kosciuszko. Together, Kim and Michelle discuss how past experiences can shape our beliefs, relationships and capacity to receive love, and why vulnerability and emotional safety are such important parts of healing. They also explore the concepts of the shadow self and the golden shadow, the importance of recognising our strengths, and how life’s challenges can become opportunities for deeper self-awareness and personal evolution. Michelle shares her holistic approach to trauma recovery, guided by three stages, Recover, Rebuild and Reconnect. Through her work supporting women in midlife, she highlights the importance of addressing our physical, mental, emotional and relational well being as interconnected parts of our overall health. Kim and Michelle discuss why healing cannot be rushed, how self-love means honouring our changing needs, and the importance of creating healthy boundaries when relationships become difficult or unsupportive. They also explore how to support loved ones through challenging times by offering compassion and a safe space, rather than trying to fix everything for them. Whether you are navigating the effects of past trauma, moving through a significant life transition or simply ready to reconnect with yourself, this conversation offers hope, practical wisdom and a reminder that healing is a personal journey. About Michelle Michelle Akers is a Holistic Trauma Recovery Expert. She bridges the gap between holistic health and mental wellbeing weaving the two worlds together. Due to her own trauma’s, which saw her needing to start her whole life from scratch in her mid-thirties, she became the multidisciplinary expert she needed when the system continually let her down. With almost 25 years in the industry, she specialises in trauma recovery, helping women in midlife go from their rock bottom to being genuinely happy and healthy. She is the author of the three times Amazon best seller ‘The Mastery of Wellness: Unlock the Secrets to Transforming Your Health and Emotional Wellbeing’. Michelle uses a root cause, whole woman approach. She leans into her own life experiences, not just her clinical knowledge to support her clients mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing from the ground up. Her definition of Self Love is: I think self love is honouring your needs as they ebb and flow. What do you need to love yourself, honour yourself, care for yourself today or this week? Her favourite quote is: Dare to chase a dream. Connect with Michelle on any of her platforms Quotes: I knew for me in my heart, there was always a big love out there for me. During a lot of my healing years, that person became myself first and foremost. When we go through life’s hardships, especially in relationship, there can be that element of fear or dread that maybe love isn’t out there for you. I just like to be that reminder of hope. My heart was open to allowing love in. We know that fear is false evidence appearing real. It’s okay to be shit scared of something that is good. You deserve the good things in your life and I think part of that is learning how to receive that love. It is kind of like a spiral staircase of self evolution and wanting to be the best version of ourselves and to keep evolving into that next stage. I sit here today, married to the man of my dreams, and I feel like there is a whole other level of gratitude because of what I have experienced in my past. I think the golden shadow is all of the beautiful traits and qualities and everything that we possess as an individual that we might see in other people. The golden shadow is giving yourself permission to accept and acknowledge all of the wonder that you really are. A beautiful self-connection technique is to ask, is this mine? Is this emotion mine? Is this thought mine? This too shall pass. It is a privilege to go through the hard times and it is a privilege to support other people in the hard times. I love taking women from their rock bottoms to being genuinely healthy and happy and being able to start what I call a whole new chapter of life because I think of life a bit like a book. The book of their life is still being written and they get to change and choose how the next chapters will evolve. I walk people through elements with what I call recover, rebuild, and reconnect stages of trauma recovery. It is their own journey and it doesn’t need to be rushed. It doesn’t need to be forced. I always say to clients and women that I teach that, I will be over here believing in you until you can do that for yourself. I think the safest thing to do is to step back and to love them from a distance because it doesn’t mean you don’t care about them, but it also means you care and love for yourself too. There is no dream that is silly. It is whatever is in your heart, maybe it is time to dare to chase a dream. SLP 625: Self Love Quicky - Live Life Out Loud

In this week’s Quicky of the Self Love Podcast, Kim invites you to embrace the freedom of living life out loud, without waiting until you have everything figured out or feel completely healed. She explores the importance of self love, self acceptance and personal growth, reminding us that while labels and diagnoses can offer understanding, they should never define who we are. Kim encourages you to embrace your quirks, own your unique qualities and stop shrinking yourself to fit others’ expectations. Discover the difference between personal growth and self rejection, and learn how to show up more authentically, even when fear or the possibility of judgment holds you back. Self Love isn’t about being perfect; it is about having the courage to be unapologetically yourself while remaining open to growth. Your life is precious, and you don’t need to have it all together to start living it fully. All the essential oils mentioned in this show can be found at www.twenty8.com. Don’t forget to use your Self Love Podcast special code below. Links to follow: Website: https://twenty8.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twenty8essentials/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/twenty8essentials Quotes: We all have things that we are working on and things we simply need to learn to embrace. A label can explain something about you without becoming the definition of you. You certainly do not need to squeeze the magnificent complexity of who you are into some neat little box so that other people may feel more comfortable. This is me. I am still learning. I am still growing. I have things I am working on. I am becoming a master of myself. I am going to live life fully, while I do all of these things. Your business is to decide how you want to live your life regardless. We can work on ourselves without being at war with ourselves. Instead of constantly asking, What is wrong with me? Try asking. What do I know about myself now that can help me live better? Welcome to being human. We are all gloriously imperfect works in progress. Do not wait until you feel completely healed, confident, understood, or accepted before you give yourself permission to live. Self love isn’t becoming perfectly polished version of yourself. Perhaps it is becoming more deeply, courageously, unapologetically yourself, while remaining curious enough to keep growing, manifesting and expanding. You don’t need everybody to understand you in order to fully live your life out loud. This is your one precious life. Love yourself for now, enough to live it. Love yourself enough to live it out loud. SLP 624: Learning to Love Yourself After a Late ADHD Diagnosis with Karen Dennett

In this episode of The Self Love Podcast, Kim chats with educator, business mentor and late-diagnosed ADHD advocate Karen Dennett about navigating motherhood, business and life while learning to understand herself in a whole new way. Karen shares her journey of balancing family responsibilities with a demanding career, carrying the mental load so many women experience, and the impact of discovering her ADHD later in life. From time blindness and distraction to processing difficulties and the challenges of feeling like she should be able to do it all, Karen reflects on how her diagnosis helped her reframe years of self doubt, recognise her strengths and better understand both herself and her son. Together, Kim and Karen explore mother guilt, the pressure to meet others expectations and the importance of finding practical support rather than judgement. Karen also shares how her experience as an educator and entrepreneur inspired her work supporting women in business through Hello Monday, a weekly business practice program designed to make progress feel more manageable through simple systems, focus sessions and community accountability. This conversation is a beautiful reminder that self love isn’t about getting everything right or pushing harder; it is about understanding your needs, working with your brain rather than against it, and allowing yourself the space to process feedback without taking it personally. Karen encourages us to let go of the labels and narratives others place on us and to define success on our own terms. About Karen Karen Dennett is a Perth-based educator, award-winning business mentor, mum and founder of Hello Monday, a business community and skill-building program supporting women to build micro-businesses alongside real life. With more than two decades of experience across education, communications, marketing and leadership development, Karen combines practical structure with empathy and emotional intelligence to help women make meaningful progress without the pressure to do it all. A late ADHD diagnosis in her 40s changed the way Karen understood many of the things she had struggled with throughout her life, particularly around organisation, overwhelm, motherhood and the feeling that she should be coping better. Looking back, she recognised how much shame she had carried around things she had interpreted as personal failings. Her diagnosis gave her a different lens through which to understand herself and, importantly, helped her begin the process of self-forgiveness. Today, Karen supports women to understand how they work best, challenge the expectations and beliefs that keep them stuck, and create businesses and lives that fit their actual values, capacity and circumstances. Her approach combines practical strategies, supportive structure and Kaizen, the philosophy of making small, consistent improvements over time. Karen is passionate about helping women move away from the idea that they need to constantly fix themselves or “go all in” to be successful. Instead, she encourages women to build businesses that support the lives they actually want, with greater self-awareness, self-compassion and sustainable progress at the centre. Her definition of Self Love is: Self love is being able to give myself that space to reflect. To give myself time to process and really examine what has been said and decide, what part of that person’s narrative is on them and is theirs to own and what part is genuine feedback that I can take on board and maybe shift. Her favourite quote is: You could be the juiciest peach on the tree and there will still be people out there who don’t like peaches. Links to follow: Website: https://www.karendennett.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karendennettmmm LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karen-dennett-868507138 All new Hello Monday members receive an impact and goal setting Kickstarter valued at $295. Quotes: Sometimes it is a case of if we don’t do it, it doesn’t get done. It is the mental load that we take on. There are some really significant things that you can do for yourself that actually mean working smarter and not harder. You have to parent as if you don’t work and you have to work as if you don’t parent. I was trying to be everything and do everything. When I got the diagnosis and really understood that actually it is more of a delay in processing, and it takes me a while, I get time blindness and there is a whole range of other things. You want to take on more because you don’t want people to think that you are not capable or you can’t handle it. I realised that I have actually got a ton of strengths and I am trying to be everything and do everything, which I can’t possibly do. Being willing to ask for help and not be ashamed but also being able to redefine who I am as a person and what that means for me. Letting go of other people’s narratives and realising, this is who I am, this is what is good and what I need to work on. Sometimes you just need someone to say, where can I help you? Or say you are obviously struggling with this. Let me take some of that on or let me help you. I never associate struggle with learning as poor behaviour. When you have a diagnosis, especially for me, later in life, it helped me to process and understand I genuinely am experiencing this, it is genuinely a challenge that I have. It is not pigeonholing or categorising yourself in a certain space of that I can never be able to do that. Strength doesn’t have to be doing everything. It is about working out what you want outcomes to be, how you want your life to be, how you want to lead your life, what goals do you want to achieve? What do you want to accomplish? There is no shame in asking somebody and you don’t necessarily have to learn the skills. You can have a business, you can achieve them, but you just look at what do I do? What do I delegate? Or what do I automate? It is about embracing Mondays without the overwhelm, without the stress. Be the best version of yourself. Give yourself space to process. SLP 623: Self Love Quicky - Is It Time to Unhypnotise Yourself?

In this Self Love Podcast Quicky, Kim explores the powerful idea of “unhypnotising” ourselves from the limiting beliefs and unconscious patterns that can shape how we see ourselves and what we believe is possible. Drawing on her experience as a clinical hypnotherapist and Carol Dweck’s work on fixed and growth mindsets, Kim invites us to notice the stories we repeat and get curious about where they came from and whether they are actually true. Rather than judging ourselves for these thoughts, Kim encourages us to question them, look for evidence of what else might be possible, and reframe our inner dialogue with greater openness and compassion. Because our past may have shaped who we have been, it doesn’t have to determine who we become and perhaps one of the greatest acts of self-love is becoming curious enough to question the stories that hold us back. All the essential oils mentioned in this show can be found at www.twenty8.com. Don’t forget to use your Self Love Podcast special code below. Links to follow: Website: https://twenty8.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twenty8essentials/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/twenty8essentials Quotes: Your job isn’t to hypnotise people. Your job is to unhypnotize them. I love the concept of unhypnotizing ourselves. It means becoming conscious of what you have been running unconsciously. Is that actually true? Or is it simply something I have believed for a very long time? A fixed mindset says this is who I am. A growth mindset asks, who could I become? A fixed mindset says, I am no good at this. A growth mindset says, I am not good at this just yet. Instead of, I can’t do this, what if you could say, I could learn how to do this? A thought is not necessarily a truth. A belief is not necessarily an identity and your past does not necessarily have to become the blueprint for your future. You don’t have to know exactly who you are becoming or where you are going. Just be willing to stop automatically believing everything you have previously told yourself about who you are. What story am I ready to wake up from? Maybe even more importantly, who might I become if I stopped believing that story. One of the greatest acts of self love is becoming curious enough to know that you can keep questioning the stories that are holding you back or keeping you small. Maybe you simply just need to unhypnotize yourself from everything that convinced you that you couldn’t be more. SLP 622: Living an Activated Life with Ian Clark

In this episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim sits down with Ian Clark to explore his remarkable health journey and his path from the oil industry into the world of natural health. After facing serious health challenges and the discovery of a tumour, Ian chose to step away from conventional medical interventions and take a different approach focusing on detoxification, nutrition, stress reduction, environmental factors, and creating what he describes as a healthy internal “terrain.” Ian shares his belief in the body’s innate intelligence and its interconnected systems, and explains why he sees personal responsibility, self respect and lifestyle choices as powerful foundations for wellbeing. Ian also shares the story behind Activation Products and his mission to support the body’s natural healing potential through products such as marine phytoplankton, transdermal magnesium, iodine, and other wellness focused formulations. Together, Kim and Ian explore the deeper meaning of self love, as well as the importance of questioning conventional health narratives, seeking knowledge and connecting with others who are committed to better health. The conversation is an inspiring exploration of what may be possible when we take greater ownership of our wellbeing and become more conscious of how we nourish, cleanse and care for the body. About Ian Ian Clark is the founder of Activation Products, a health researcher, formulator, philosopher, and host of the Younger Than Yesterday podcast. His work is rooted in a deeply personal experience. At 49, after years of declining health, Ian was faced with a life-threatening prognosis that fundamentally changed the direction of his life. Rather than accepting that trajectory, he began an intensive exploration into human health, studying the body as an interconnected system and seeking out researchers, practitioners, scientists, traditional knowledge, and emerging approaches from around the world. What began as a personal pursuit evolved into a decades-long study of longevity, nutrition, mineralization, cellular health, detoxification, and the foundational systems that allow the body to function at its best. That journey ultimately led Ian to found Activation Products, where he has spent years researching and developing formulations designed to provide the body with high-quality nutritional and foundational support. Central to his philosophy is the belief that there is rarely one singular answer to health. Instead, the body’s systems communicate and operate together, and lasting vitality requires understanding and supporting that interconnectedness. Today, at 67, Ian continues to research, experiment, formulate, and share what he has learned. Through Activation Products, his educational work, and conversations on Younger Than Yesterday, he explores longevity, human potential, and practical ways people can become more informed and intentional participants in their own health. His mission is simple: to help people better understand the intelligence of the human body, give them access to the knowledge and tools he wishes he had decades ago, and help more people pursue a longer, healthier and more activated life. His definition of Self Love is: Respect. When we are always learning to respect ourselves more, then we can respect others more, because I can only respect you as much as I respect me. I can only love you as much as I love me. Self love is learning to respect the wonderful body we have been given, the wonderful gifts that we have even given. And that love is perfect love. When we are shown how to love ourselves, how to respect ourselves, how to take care of ourselves, then we can express that exact love out there for others and then they will love you. His favourite quote or final message: You are more intelligent than you ever dream possible. You all have a super gift. Very slowly, I started meeting the right people at the right time, I was led to them. My body is controlling me. My body is not me, really. It is part of me. It was like a big switch that just went off, and it never happened again. Once I was set free from all that stuff, it was just a journey of realising that you can get super healthy. When you create a better microbiome, you feed the friendly bacteria, you get rid of the candida, yeast overgrowth, all the heavy metals have to be detoxed. The courage I learned is something you earn. You have a certain amount of courage within you. You have to build up a bank account full of courage. The biggest problem in the world, in general, is really fear based. I refused to be afraid. What we were told is normal is based on very flawed information. What is normal anyway? If there is a problem, there has to be a solution. The bodies innate ability and the bodies intelligence is so sophisticated. The body is a self healing biological miracle. If you spend the time respecting your body, taking care of yourself, doing self care, then you are going get a little bit better all the time. If you get into a fight with Mother Nature, it is a guaranteed you are going to lose. Nobody wins getting in a fight with Mother Nature. Cleanse and nourish simultaneously. Every listener is on the same grid. So the truth is there. You need to take ownership. No more outsourcing your challenges to other people. You have got to take ownership, take responsibility, love yourself, and take care of yourself at a really high level and you are going to get better all the time. It comes right back to you, learning to tell yourself what the truth is rather than having somebody else tell you. What you speak is what you manifest. You are absolutely amazing. You are completely good enough. You are getting better every single day. Surround yourself with people who are out to serve others. SLP 621: Self Love Quicky - Take Care of Yourself to Love Yourself

In this weeks Quicky of the Self Love Podcast, Kim explores what true self care really looks like and why it has far less to do with expensive treatments and far more to do with the small choices we make every day. From getting out of bed and drinking water to moving our bodies, nourishing ourselves, prioritising sleep and paying attention to our self talk, Kim shares simple ways to show ourselves that we matter, especially when life feels challenging. She explores the idea that we can behave our way into self love by consistently taking small actions before we necessarily feel motivated, and reminds us that self love isn’t a destination to reach, but a practice we choose again and again. Kim invites us to choose three tiny daily self care rituals and discover how these seemingly small acts can create meaningful shifts in our wellbeing. All the essential oils mentioned in this show can be found at www.twenty8.com. Don’t forget to use your Self Love Podcast special code below. Links to follow: Website: https://twenty8.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twenty8essentials/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/twenty8essentials Quotes: Self care is how you show yourself that you matter. Keep making small choices that say, I am worth looking after, my body deserves this. My mind deserves rest. My heart deserves kindness. Eventually those little choices become evidence, evidence that you can trust yourself. Do not underestimate the little things, because it is the little things done consistently that become the big things. Taking care of yourself isn’t only for the days when life is going well. Sometimes self love simply says today we are just going to keep going. Discipline becomes devotion, devotion builds self trust. Self love isn’t something you finally achieve. Self love is something you practice day after day, choice after choice, moment after moment. You simply have to keep coming home to yourself. One foot in front of the other, take the next loving step, and ask yourself, how can I love myself well today? SLP 620: Wild at Heart: Katie Johnston on Self Love, Resilience & Love in Action

In this inspiring conversation, Kim sits down with Katie Johnston to explore her remarkable journey of resilience, self discovery and self love. Katie opens up about her experiences with bullying, personal trauma and her time on Married at First Sight, sharing how these challenges shaped her approach to health and wellness. She discusses the philosophy behind her book Health Through Self Love and her belief that meaningful change comes from authenticity, compassion and taking small, consistent steps towards better physical and mental wellbeing. Katie also shares how she has transformed her personal experiences into a platform for positive impact, from her social enterprise cafés and online community to her humanitarian work in Uganda. At the heart of the conversation is the 500 Mums initiative, supporting Serena and the 38 children in her care while working towards a sustainable future through education, land and income generating opportunities. Katie and Kim explore the power of self love, forgiveness and community, and how individual actions can create meaningful change far beyond ourselves. About Katie: Katie is the founder of It’s Wild Wellness, a shame-free wellness community built around the belief that taking care of yourself shouldn’t come from hating yourself first. She is the author of Health Through Self Love and has a background in behavioural science, psychology, life coaching and remedial therapy, with a particular interest in the relationship between our psychology, biology, behaviour and physical health. Katie’s own wellness story has been anything but linear. After years of navigating significant changes in her body, weight, health and relationship with herself, she began questioning the traditional idea that lasting change needs to be driven by discipline, restriction or dissatisfaction with who we are. Instead, her work explores what can happen when self-love becomes the starting point rather than the finish line. Through It’s Wild Wellness, Katie brings together evidence-based health information, psychology and real-life experience to help make wellness feel less overwhelming and more accessible — particularly for people who feel like they’re starting from scratch, starting again, or have spent years believing they’ve somehow failed at health. At the heart of her approach is what she calls the Positive Upward Spiral: the idea that one small act of self-care can make the next positive choice a little easier, gradually creating momentum across our physical health, mental wellbeing and everyday life. Katie is also known for sharing her life very openly — including her experience with body image, obesity, weight loss, strength training and appearing on Married at First Sight Australia — while challenging the shame and judgement that so often surround conversations about bodies and health. Her message is simple: you don’t have to hate yourself into becoming healthier. You can care for the person you are today while still wanting more for yourself tomorrow. Her definition of Self Love is: Self Love is one foot in front of the other. It is the little micro things. It is the consistency and practice of those. It is not big, grand goals and gestures and this and that. It is the little things that you do. Her favourite quote is : Nothing is Perfect. I was felt a bit more mature, a bit more insightful, I could see patterns and I could see things that other people couldn’t realise. I stuffed a lot of emotions down. I didn’t reach out to anyone because I felt like every time that I was hurting, I was being ungrateful. I learned to mask a lot of things. I learned to suppress a lot of things. I am big on empathy but I am also equally big on boundaries. It can be part of your story as a victim or it can be part of your story as a lesson. It has been such a journey and it has been such a roller coaster and life constantly presents new lessons, new challenges and new things to make you more resilient. It is the hardest things that have happened to me, that has helped me realise how strong I am. I can walk forward, take one foot in front of the other and use it as evidence of my resilience or I will let it crush me. Don’t shame yourself, don’t judge yourself, don’t knock yourself, don’t put yourself down. Don’t talk badly to yourself. Just celebrate each time you take a step forward. Life just wants me to be stronger. I need to see strong women who can go through the fire and come out the other end stronger. You can just be a normal person trying to be a good person in the world, doing the best you can, and that is more than enough. Forgive, not yourself, forgive others for yourself. Free yourself from it. Love yourself from the start. That is your starting block. And then everything that you add to it is little practises of self-love. If I can do it and I can stand here as the strong, self-loving, healthy, independent woman that I am. Given where I have come from, then I sit here as an example of that. We need to see people being raw and honest and real and not just pouting on Instagram for a selfie. We need authenticity. If I can take up a bit of that space and provide that for people, then that is my legacy. The concept of perfection is flawed Nothing is perfect, nothing has to be perfect. There is no end goals. It is just one foot in front of the other. It is those tiny little nudges and practising and compounding over time that will take you to where you want to go. SLP 619: Self Love Quicky What is Your BHAG?

In this episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim explores the power of setting a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal (BHAG). A goal that stretches you beyond your current capabilities while remaining deeply aligned with your personal values. She shares a practical framework to help you uncover what you would pursue if failure weren’t possible, identify what truly matters, embrace the excitement and fear that come with big dreams, and consider who you need to become along the way. Most importantly, Kim reminds us that we don’t need the perfect plan or to feel completely ready before we begin. Confidence, clarity and momentum are built through action, so the invitation is to dream bigger, take the first step today, and regularly check in to ensure your goal continues to feel meaningful and aligned. All the essential oils mentioned in this show can be found at www.twenty8.com. Don’t forget to use your Self Love Podcast special code below. Links to follow: Website: https://twenty8.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/twenty8essentials/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/twenty8essentials Quotes: A big hairy audacious goal must be a goal that is big enough, bold enough, and exciting enough to stretch you beyond who you are today. We are designed to fully grow, fully bloom. Fully be our best versions of ourselves. I think gratitude and ambition can coexist right next to each other. You can love who you are today and still be excited about who you are becoming. You do not need to have the entire plan or have this whole strategy all written out. Clarity often comes through action. Confidence comes through taking action and then momentum will arise through taking action. What can I do today that will move me 1% closer? Sometimes the greatest gift isn’t actually in achieving it. It is who you become whilst you are pursuing it. It is about discovering just how much it is possible when you decide to truly show up and back yourself in your own life. You do matter! Your goals matter.
